Add D drive space to C drive to fix "not enough space on C drive"

As the main hard disk partition of a computer, C drive is generally used for storing the operating system. So, it is the default local system boot disk. Meanwhile, C drive is the most widely used drive on a computer because the default storage location of almost all the programs is C drive. However, if the C drive is full, the computer will become slow and even collapse. Have you ever been prompted that not enough space on C drive? For this case, either you can clean C drive or extend C drive. In this article which is divided into 4 parts, you will learn how to shrink D drive and extend C drive in Windows 10


Part 1. Backup data on Drive to another drive with iSumsoft Cloner

Before extending C drive, we should resize the partition to make more free space, which will format the partition. Do you know how to resize partition in Windows 10 without losing data? Yes, we should backup the data first.

Note: In this example, we shrink D drive, so we should backup D drive. You can, of course, shrink any other drive which has surplus space but remember to backup it. To make a secure backup, we can use iSumsoft Cloner which is reliable and powerful.

Step 1: Download iSumsoft Cloner and install it on your computer.

Step 2: Open iSumsoft Cloner, click Backup, and then select D drive.

Step 3: Click Choose to choose a path to save the backup file, maybe another drive or a USB flash drive, but not D drive.

Note: The free space of the location you select must be bigger than the used space of D drive.

Part 2. Delete D drive

After making a backup of the data, to avoid unnecessary data loss, you are recommended to check whether there is a running program stored in D drive. If so, you should close it or move it to another drive. After that, we can be relieved to format the D drive.

Step 1: Right-click This PC and click Manage.

Step 2: Click Disk Management to show the information of the drives.

Step 3: Select D drive, right-click it and click Delete Volume.

Step 4: Click Yes to close the confirmation window.

Part 3. Extend C drive

After deleting D drive, an unallocated space will be created which can be used to extend C drive. This part tells you how to increase c drive space in Windows 10 without any software.

Step 1: In the Disk Management, select C drive, right-click it and click Extend Volume.

Step 2: Click Next to continue.

Step 3: Select the amount of space you want to add to C drive in MB and click Next.

Note: Don't add the total available space to C drive, because we need to use a part to create D drive.

Part 4. Create D drive again

To manage the data on the computer better, we still need a D drive, so we should create it again.

Step 1: Open Disk Management, right-click the unallocated space and click New Simple Volume.

Step 2: Specify Volume Size and click Next. We can select the maximum here.

Step 3: Assign the following drive letter as D drive and click Next.

Step 4: In this step, we can choose the default item and click Next.

Step 5: Click Finish to complete.

Step 6: Open iSumsoft Cloner, click Restore and select D drive.

Step 7: Click Choose, select the backup file we saved in part 1, and then click Open.
